Imran Khan was trying to get an Indian passport, admited to being an American citizen, was frustrated to not be able to vote in India: 'I have voted for Barack Obama'

Actor Imran Khan is currently making headlines after being detained at a CJP protest in Mumbai and then getting a notice from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to leave India by October 28.

The notice came after BJP leader Kirit Somaiya alleged that Imran, a US citizen, had violated OCI rules and visa conditions by joining the protest. Amid this, the actor’s old remarks about his citizenship have resurfaced.Imran Khan was born in the US to Nuzhat Khan and Anil Pal while they were students there. After his parents separated, Imran moved to Mumbai with his mother when he was around 3 years old. In a 2009 interview with The Times of India, Imran said, “Very few people know that I am an American citizen; I have even voted for Barack Obama four years ago."He added, “I believe that only voting can help us throw out the corrupt politicians and give chance to young leaders who want to bring about change. After the 26/11 attacks, a few people suggested we stop paying taxes, but that is not going to help." A few years later, in 2011, Imran said that he had been trying to get an Indian passport.“I am trying to get an Indian passport. The official proceedings are on. I hope I acquire it soon as some big things are on their way," he told India Today and added, “I feel it is my duty to serve my country.

I cannot vote here because I am not a citizen, but I do take part in elections by creating awareness about the importance of voting, because I feel I am a part of this country."In a 2013 chat with Hindustan Times, the actor said, “It’s ridiculous. Personally, it’s more frustrating as, being an American citizen, I can’t vote here. So I feel driven to make up for it in other ways. Even if I manage to get 20 people to vote, I feel like I’ve contributed."Meanwhile, Imran is reportedly planning to contest the FRRO notice in the Bombay High Court. According to reports, his legal team is expected to file a petition by Friday or Monday, challenging the directive as “drastic". Imran has been getting support from his industry peers and fans, who are taking to social media in large numbers to express their opinions.
