U-17 WWC: ‘We are the Brazilians of Africa’ – Ghana coach after draw with South Americans

Ghana coach Joe Nana Adarkwa has described his side as the “Brazilians of Africa” after coming from behind to secure a point against the South Americans at the ongoing U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Black Maidens, who suffered a 3-0 defeat to Norway in their opener, were staring defeat in the face against Brazil, which could have ended their campaign.

But Priscilla Mensah struck five minutes from time to deny the South Americans victory as both sides settled for a 3-3 draw.

"We all know how Brazilians play, but we are the Brazilians of Africa," Adarkwa told FIFA after the match.

"We are like them, but Brazil are up there. We are getting stronger and we will get there. I'm happy that our girls responded to our two training sessions. We did some scoring in training, and they applied that."

“We are in one of the toughest groups, but I’m proud of my girls. After equalising, we had so many chances, but they are young, they are learning, so we have a lot to do with the girls. But I’m happy for them."

Ghana sit bottom of Group C and must win their final group game, while also hoping other results go their way, to stand a chance of progressing to the next round.

The Maidens face Canada on Saturday, with their opponents sitting second in the group after a 3-2 victory over Norway.
