UWC commits to flying Pride Flag

Translate

The University of Western Cape (UWC) has committed to flying its Pride Flag, which it claims represents inclusion, equity and social justice.

The institution is also celebrating the first anniversary of an LGBTIQA forum led by staff.

UWC PROUDLY FLYS PRIDE FLAG

On its social media platforms, UWC shared its pride in flying the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag, which represents different parts of the community.

“It serves as a visible reminder of the University’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, equity and social justice”, the university shared.

The university shared that the flag also marked another significant milestone: the first anniversary of Queer Dubs, a staff-led forum that has hosted discussions affecting the LGBTQ community, on issues related to gender, sexuality and social justice.

“The Pride Flag remains an important symbol of that work. More than a marker of visibility, it represents the ongoing pursuit of a university community grounded in respect, accountability and inclusion. It serves as a reminder that creating equitable spaces requires continual engagement and collective effort”, the university said of its stance.

BISHOPS BACKLASH

Unlike UWC, another Cape Town learning institution, Bishops Diocesan College has come under fire for flying the Pride Flag.

The Cape Town all-boys school has made headlines after members of the Old Diocesan Committee (ODC) called for their alma mater to take a “neutral” stance.

In recent months, actor and comedian Anton Taylor, an alumnus, challenged a committee of Old Boys who have rejected the school’s decision to fly a Pride flag for just two days in the year, during Pride month in June.

Despite being served with a cease-and-desist letter from the ODC after his public criticism, Taylor responded that he would not be silenced.
