South Africa’s safest coastal suburb and what it costs to live there

Life along the coast can be blissful, until you’re the victim of a crime.

Crime can and does happen anywhere, even in the safer suburbs.

But where it’s safer, there’s less reason to worry about break-ins, vehicle thefts, pickpocketing, or crimes of opportunity.

One coastal suburb has a 3.3% crime rate, the lowest among the nation’s coastal police precincts.

The Safest Coastal Suburb in South Africa

Melkbosstrand along the West Coast is the safest coastal suburb in South Africa.

This is based on data from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the 2022 census.

According to SAPS, in the year ending March 2026, only 485 crimes were reported in Melkbosstrand.

The City of Cape Town’s Census data shows the suburb has 14 561 residents as of 2022.

In 12 months, the Melkbosstrand police precinct, which covers 5 areas, including Melkbosstrand, recorded 1.32 crimes a day.

The most reported crimes in the area include:

  • Commercial crime (27.3%)
  • Drug-related crime (9.7%)
  • Common assault (7.6%)
  • Theft from a vehicle (7.2%)
  • Residential burglary (6.6%)
  • Other theft not mentioned elsewhere (19.2%)

But access to safety comes at a premium.

To live in the safest coastal suburb, you’ll need at least R1.3 million.

For this price, you’ll get a 53-square-metre 2-bedroom flat.

Life in Melkbosstrand

Melkbosstrand has a large community of over-50s.

Most (76.3%) of the owners in the area are over 50, according to Property24.

But younger buyers, pushed out of the City Centre by rising rents and property prices, are also making Melkbosstrand their home.

Among the 137 property sales recorded this year, under-50s make up 47.1%.

Melkbosstrand has plenty to offer young professionals and families.

The suburb is 29.2 kilometres from Cape Town city centre.

That’s a 35-minute drive during off-peak periods, an hour in traffic.

But there’s the option to take the Melkbosstrand MyCiti bus.

It links to Table View and eventually to the city centre, reducing travel time.

Beyond safety, residents have access to a coveted school district.

Melkbosstrand High, where school fees are R35 600 as of 2026, is ranked 147 in the nation according to Matric Performance.

Melkbosstrand Privaatskool, the suburb’s private school, has a 100% bachelor pass rate.

Fees range from R82 080 for primary school and R106 920 for high school.
