‘Vikram Vedha’

Released in 2017, the neo-noir thriller starred Vijay Sethupathi playing a morally complex gangster opposite R Madhavan as a righteous cop. The film takes inspiration from the popular Vikram-Betaal folktale to build the characters of the leads. The film’s storyline takes an intense mood as Vedha, Vijay’s character keeps surrendering to Vikram and tells him stories that makes Vikarm question his own sense of right and wrong.

‘Super Deluxe’

Vijay Sethupathi’s one of the most popular characters in his career remains Shilpa from the film ‘Super Deluxe’ where he played a transgender woman. It shows his character returning to Chennai after gender-affirming surgery to reconnect with her son from before her transition, and with her ex-wife's family, who struggle to accept her in the Thiagarajan Kumararaja directorial. His performance received widespread critical acclaim.

‘96’

In the 2018 Tamil film ‘96’, Vijay Sethupathi played the leading role as Ramachandran opposite Trisha Krishnan who played Janaki. The film showed his character who is an introverted photographer and travel documentarian who never married, still emotionally tethered to his first love from school. The film and his performance were huge critical and commercial successes.

‘Soodhu Kavvum’

Looking at another cult classic of Vijay Sethupathi, it is the 2013 black comedy crime film ‘Soodhu Kavvum’ where he played Das.

Das is seen as a quirky small-time kidnapper who runs these operations with a group of misfit friends. However, they have an operating code which makes them only kidnap people who "deserve" it in some way. His character became one of the breakout roles that got him limelight and opened opportunities for leading films.

‘Pizza’

Speaking of Vijay Sethupathi’s breakout films, ‘Pizza’ is surely one of them. The Tamil horror drama features Vijay as a delivery boy named Micheal. During one stormy night, he delivers an order to a spooky old house and gets pulled into a chilling, mysterious encounter. The film’s slow burn horror mystery by the vision of Karthik Subbaraj who helmed the film made it one of the most highly rated films.
