This is the heartwarming moment a group of strangers came together to rescue a dog that had fallen into a canal in Manchester.

One man was dropped down the side of the slippery wall in Ancoats with a group holding onto his feet as he tried to pull up the panicked dog, Sumak.

Batu Akyol had been walking Sumak on September 12 when the dog had fallen down the steep canal sides.

Mr Akyol managed to keep the animal's head above water by holding onto the lead but was unable to drag Sumak out.

But two students, Jack Spencer Furmston and Ben Camphor, had been leaving a nearby coffee shop when saw Mr Akyol in distress and came to his aid.

Four other passersby quickly stopped also when they saw the commotion and began to form a human chain.

Sumak was seen desperately trying to claw at the walls as the man was lowered head-first to the murky canal.

Once the man reached the dog's collar he was able to lift Sumak most of the way until the other men leaned down and helped carry him over the last section.
