SIBU, Oct 3 — Green lights illuminated Sibu Hospital on Thursday night in tribute to the hospital’s first solid organ donor in seven years.
The deceased female teacher, identified only as Madam SK, donated her kidneys and corneas.
“Hospital Sibu honours the memory of Madam SK – a loving wife, caring mother, and lifelong educator whose final act was one of supreme selflessness,” the hospital said on Facebook.
“By becoming an organ donor, Madam SK donated her kidneys and corneas, saving the lives and restoring the vision of complete strangers. This selfless act marks the first solid organ donation at Hospital Sibu since 2019.”
The hospital also acknowledged the vital role played by the donor’s family.
“To make such a compassionate decision amidst grief and hardship reflects an extraordinary degree of love and courage. We are forever indebted to their heroism,” said the hospital.
When contacted by The Borneo Post, Sibu Hospital director Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu said the last solid organ donation had previously taken place at the hospital in 2019, when there was a liver and kidney donation.

In 2017 and 2022, the hospital also had tissue donation of corneas.
“This was the fourth organ donation (carried out in Sibu Hospital),” he said.
Dr Nanthakumar stated that the latest organ donor was a 55-year-old female teacher.
“She donated her corneas and both kidneys in an act of kindness and heroism to save lives,” he added.
Separately, Anaesthesia Sibu also posted on the vital organ donation.
It pointed out that the process of organ donation “requires utmost reverence and seamless teamwork”.
“Organ donation extends far beyond the bedside — it takes an entire community of dedicated professionals working in harmony to honour this priceless gift.
“From our hospital leadership, pastoral and religious support (ustaz), anaesthesia and intensive care teams, neurosurgery, radiology, ophthalmology, microbiology laboratory team, ICU, and operating theatre nurses, and support staff, to our local surgical specialists and those flown in alongside the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) team from Kuala Lumpur and Kuching — every single person played a vital role,” said the post.
Anaesthesia Sibu also thanked law enforcement agencies and airline transport services for swift coordination to ensure the organs safely made the journey from Sibu to the Klang Valley to give waiting recipients a second chance at life.
Photos shared by Anaesthesia Sibu also showed Sibu Hospital doctors, nurses, and other staff, many with their hands over their hearts, lining up in tribute for what is known as the walk of respect for the donor and her family as she was moved to the operating room for the organ donation. — The Borneo Post
