Days after Mammootty turned 75, the makers of his upcoming film Padayaatra unveiled its trailer. What makes the film special is that it reunites the megastar with veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The two artists come together after a gap of 32 years. The trailer is just 1 minute and 14 seconds long, but it packs in quite a lot.

The trailer of the upcoming film features Mammootty as a doctor. The narrative takes place in a town in Kerala. The trailer opens with a character reminding Mammootty, “Times are changing. And it calls for some compromises.” Mammootty responds with a grin, “Times don’t change. We do.” We then see the people in the town speculate about Mammootty’s charitable services and where he gets the money from. Mammootty encourages his patients to pay him whatever they can and does not have a fixed fee.

The trailer further shows Mammootty going about his work as a doctor while advising people he encounters. However, things change in the town when they face a Maoist attack. The investigation reaches the doctor’s clinic. The police are seen as hesitant to investigate the doctor, but tell him that when a complaint arrives, they have to investigate. The trailer hints that he has even been accused of sedition. Although it is not clear if the police have filed a case against him, or if these are random accusations.

Mammootty and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s collaboration has fetched the duo National Awards. In fact, Mammootty’s first two National Awards were for the veteran filmmaker’s Mathilukal and Vidheyan. Padayaatra also seems to have a strong core in its plot. In just 1 minute and 14 seconds, the film packs in many elements, promising a reflective experience. The film is seemingly a reflection of society. It also seems to be a rooted story.

Reportedly, Padayaatra is inspired by a true story. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Mammootty had said, “I have even met a doctor in Wayanad. He takes his scooter, his wife, and his medicines. He goes to the forest and treats people.” It will be interesting to see how Adoor Gopalakrishnan has treated the story. There is no larger-than-life element in the film, and it seems to rely on strong characters and story.

More About Padayaatra

The film also stars Indrans, Grace Antony, Aliyar, Sreeshma Chandran, Alencier Ley Lopez, Madhupal, Nandu, P Sreekumar, Jagadish, and Janardhan.
