Homilies must come from faith, not AI – Tagle

Translate

MANILA, Philippines — Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, dean of the College of Cardinals, has cautioned against the use of artificial intelligence in preparing Catholic homilies.

CBCPNews reported that Cardinal Tagle said that Catholic homilies and spiritual reflections must come from faith and not from AI.

Speaking before more than 6,000 people gathered during mass for the 75th anniversary of the Diocese of Legazpi held Wednesday at the St. Gregory the Great Cathedral in Legazpi City, Albay, the cardinal said the preaching must flow from personal faith and an encounter with Jesus.

Evangelization, he said, requires people to share their own experience of Christ.

“If it does not come from the heart, that is not a homily,” Tagle said.

He said AI-generated preaching was only a reorganization of existing information rather than a personal testimony of faith.

Tagle’s message echoed Pope Leo XIV, who had urged priests to resist using AI to write their homilies, saying it cannot replace the personal sharing of faith.
