Celebrity Traitors star Hannah Fry reveals she took inspiration from historic mathematician Alan Turing in a bid to suss out her rivals after spotting 'patterns in the way they behave'

It's a celebrity-filled reality competition, but one of this year's contestants has been taking inspiration from an unlikely source: Alan Turing.

In a bid to win the new series of Celebrity Traitors, mathematician Hannah Fry has spent time analysing all the data from the previous shows to find patterns.

And she claims she is even using the same type of mathematical thinking famously employed by Turing to crack the Enigma code.

'Have I gone back through the data of all the previous games and tried to find statistically significant patterns? Yes! There is a pattern in the way that Traitors behave,' she said ahead of the first episode last week.

'For example, Traitors often do a burn vote in the first few episodes when they're settling in.'

She cited last year's traitor Cat Burns as an example of this, saying that she noticed the singer would 'just vote for somebody that nobody else has voted for.'

The only 'problem' with this, she said, was that the faithfuls – who are attempting to catch the traitors before being 'murdered' – are usually an 'absolute mess' and make it hard to 'pick out what the signal' is.

'That's just one example of a little bit of maths that I've got in my back pocket,' she said.

'I am using the same bit of math that Alan Turing used to crack the Enigma machine.'

She said that she wasn't certain that it would serve her well in the Celebrity Traitors castle, but that she has had 'spreadsheets coming out of my eyeballs.'

But while Ms Fry, 42, may be relying on cold, hard data to get ahead, she admits her biggest challenge could be controlling her competitive streak.

'I would say I am toxically competitive. Yes, to a fault. I have to try and rein that in,' she said.

'This really is a team game. Especially for the faithfuls. The only real way the faithfuls are going to win it is if they act as a team. And I probably would rather be a faithful.

'I think it would be really fun to be a traitor, like amazingly fun, but I want to enjoy this experience as much as I possibly can for however long it lasts, and I think that I'll enjoy it more if I get to be a truer, more honest version of myself.'

And fans are already convinced that the broadcaster could go far in the BBC show - after she announced a major new career move just days before its launch.

The mathematician is hitting the road next autumn with her first-ever tour, Come Fry With Me, taking her across the UK to share her knowledge and advice with ticket holders.

While the tour will take place after Celebrity Traitors has aired, fans have speculated that the timing could hint at how well she fares in the castle.

Some believe the tour announcement could be a sign that she could emerge from the show with a major boost in popularity — and will be in high demand once her stint on the BBC series comes to an end.

It would echo the trajectory of last year's winner Alan Carr, who went on to land what was dubbed a 'holy trinity' of TV shows and became one of the most in-demand stars following his victory.

The new series of Celebrity Traitors will begin on October 1 at 8pm with an extra-long opening episode.

Joining host Claudia in the Scottish Highlands are Amol Rajan, Bella Ramsey, James Acaster, James Blunt, Jerry Hall, Joanne McNally, Joe Lycett, Julie Hesmondhalgh, King Kenny and Leigh-Anne Pinnock.

Maya Jama, Michael Sheen, Miranda Hart, Myha'la, Professor Hannah Fry, Richard E. Grant, Rob Beckett, Romesh Ranganathan, Ross Kemp, Sebastian Croft and Sharon Rooney complete the line-up.

They will play the ultimate game of detection, trust and betrayal in the hope of winning a cash prize up to £100,000 for a charity of their choice.
