Rahmat Shah Scripts History With Hundred On Captaincy Debut Against Bangladesh

Translate

Rahmat Shah began his Test captaincy tenure with a record century in the one-off Test against Bangladesh at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Sunday. Shah scored 105 in a largely lone battle for Afghanistan in their first innings in reply to Bangladesh's 346. He became the first Afghanistan player to score a century on his Test captaincy debut. Shah took over as Afghanistan's Test and ODI captain from Hashmatullah Shahidi in July this year. In his first assignment as Test captain, he achieved a historic milestone, striking 10 fours and two sixes in a 105-run knock off 216 balls.

While Shah made 105, opener Abdul Malik contributed 62 off 120 deliveries. Wicketkeeper-batter Ikram Alikhil also showed resistance with 32 from 103 balls as Afghanistan were bowled out for 240.

It was a stellar bowling display from Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud, who claimed a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul, while fellow pacer Ebadot Hossain picked up four wickets.

Mahmud became the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take a Test hat-trick and only the third Bangladesh bowler overall to achieve the feat. Before him, leg-spinner Alok Kapali (vs Pakistan in 2003) and off-spinner Sohag Gazi (vs New Zealand in 2013) had taken hat-tricks in Test cricket.

Mahmud completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Yamin Ahmadzai for an 11-ball duck. He also reached 50 Test wickets and became the fastest Bangladesh pacer to the milestone as Afghanistan were dismissed for 240, handing Bangladesh a first-innings lead of 106 runs.

Bangladesh had posted 346 in their first innings, with Tanzid Hasan Tamim (83), Shadman Islam (67) and Litton Das (53) scoring half-centuries. Mohammad Saleem Safi (4-82), Yamin Ahmadzai (3-79), Ismat Alam (2-20) and Qais Ahmad (1-60) shared the wickets for Afghanistan.
