3 men in crash that killed Rela man linked to criminal activities

KUANTAN: The three men who abandoned their car after an accident that killed a Malaysian Volunteer Corps (Rela) member in Bentong are believed to be involved in criminal activities, police said.

The trio, who were travelling in a Perodua Myvi, are believed to have gone into hiding after the 7.30am accident on Sept 14 along Jalan Mempaga-Sertik.

Acting Pahang police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said police had arrested the Myvi owner, who had rented out the car to the three men.

"Police managed to track down the Myvi owner, who lives in Bentong, on Sept 15.

The man has been remanded after testing positive for drugs.

"The car owner provided information about the three suspects, who were his friends.

"Police are tracking down their whereabouts," he told reporters after the state police monthly gathering here today.

Azry said initial investigations revealed that the trio were involved in criminal activities, including vehicle theft.

He said the car owner was being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, along with a supervision order.

In the incident, Fazlizal Abdul Samad, 41, who was riding a motorcycle, was killed on the spot after the Myvi veered into his lane.

Fazlizal, a Bentong Rela member, was returning home after completing his duties.
