MANILA, Philippines — A low pressure area (LPA) east of Luzon developed into a tropical depression but was unlikely to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Friday.

In the agency’s 5 a.m. forecast, Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina noted that the tropical depression, formerly designated as LPA 09a, was last located 1,700 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon as of 3 a.m.

“Base naman sa ating pinakahuling update, posible na itong tropical depression ay medyo maliit yung posibilidad na pumasok ng Philippine area of responsibility,” Badrina explained.

“Ang pinapakita ng mga datos natin, posible ito na humina at magiging isang low pressure area na lang at maging bahagi ng Bagyong Pilandok (international name: Krovanh) na ngayong ay patungo na sa southern part ng Japan,” he added.

(What our data shows is that it will possibly weaken and turn into a low pressure area and merge with Cyclone Pilandok, which is now heading to the southern part of Japan.)

Krovanh left the PAR on Thursday morning.

However, in a tropical cyclone outlook bulletin at 4 a.m. on Friday, Pagasa said Krovanh was still monitoring the possibility that it would re-enter the agency’s monitoring domain in the coming days.

The state weather bureau added that Tropical Depression Saudel (formerly known by the local name Obet) had weakened into an LPA and was “unlikely to redevelop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.”

Badrina noted that no other LPAs nor tropical cyclones had been monitored inside PAR as of Friday morning. /jpv
