LPA outside PAR expected to trigger rains, thunderstorms in parts of PH

MANILA, Philippines—Parts of the Visayas and Mindanao may experience scattered rain showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday as the trough or extension of a low-pressure area (LPA) continues to affect the eastern section of the country, the state weather bureau said Monday. 

As of Monday afternoon, the LPA was still outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), about 1,935 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Bohol and Davao Oriental are expected to have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the LPA’s trough, with moderate to at times heavy rain potentially triggering flash floods or landslides, Pagasa said in it latest forecast.

“Posible po pa minsan makaranas tayo ng hanggang sa malalakas na pag-ulan, kaya doble ingat sa mga kababayan natin sa posibilidad ng mga pagbaha at pagguho ng lupa,” said Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda-Carpio in a 5 p.m. weather update. 

(Residents in affected areas may still experience periods of heavy rain and are advised to take extra precautions against possible flooding and landslides.)

“Habagat,” thunderstorms

Palawan, Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro, meanwhile, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon or “habagat”, with flash floods or landslides possible.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country are also expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms and may trigger flash floods or landslides.

Moderate to rough seas in parts of Luzon

Pagasa said no gale warning was in effect, but those traveling by sea were advised to remain cautious, particularly in waters off Northern Luzon and the eastern sections of Central and Southern Luzon.

The weather bureau said these areas will have moderate to strong winds from the northeast to northwest, with moderate to rough coastal waters (1.2 to 2.8 meters).

The rest of Southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao will also experience light to moderate winds from the southwest to northwest, with slight to moderate waters (0.6 to 1.8 meters).
