A 17-year-old from Alberta has been arrested for a terrorism-related offence after allegedly corresponding with online accounts associated with ISIS.

The RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) announced the teenager’s arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday.

RCMP said the case dates back to February 2026, when police began an investigation into online correspondence between an online user and other "users affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria."

As a result of the investigation, INSET officers in Alberta arrested a 17-year-old on Oct. 26, 2026.

'Fear of terrorism offence'

The RCMP said it has commenced court proceedings against the youth by way of a terrorism peace bond under section 810.011 of the Criminal Code.

Also known as a “fear of terrorism offence," it is a preventative legal measure that allows authorities to obtain a specialized court order allowing investigators to monitor people who appear likely to commit a terrorism-related crime.

Under this section of the Criminal Code, police or the Crown can ask a judge to place a person under a peace bond if they have "reasonable grounds to fear" that the individual may commit a terrorism offence, even if there is not enough evidence yet to lay a formal criminal charge.

If a judge determines that the request is reasonable, the court can issue what is commonly known as a terrorism peace bond.

These peace bonds can include strict conditions to monitor and restrict the individual, which may include limitations on travel or their access to electronic communications.

The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was released with conditions and was scheduled to appear at the Fort McMurray Provincial Court Tuesday, RCMP said.

Investigators declined to release additional details about the teen or the investigation that led to the arrest, citing the ongoing criminal proceedings.
