Dutch PM calls for dialogue after US sanctions on ICC

Translate

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten on Friday said a six-month pause before US sanctions on the International Criminal Court take effect should be used to pursue negotiations with Washington.

“The announced sanctions by the United States against the ICC are deeply regrettable. At the same time, these sanctions will not take effect immediately. And this is crucial because it provides us vital space for dialogue in the upcoming months,” Jetten told reporters.

The Netherlands holds a special responsibility as the host country for the ICC, which is based in The Hague.

Jetten said the Dutch were “very much disappointed by this escalation” but also hailed behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts with Washington to ensure the sanctions were not immediate.

“So this will give us plenty of time to continue the conversation with the United States and all other parties involved to find a solution because the ICC is such an important part of the international legal order,” he said.
