Broken-hearted or termite gang? Man trapped in the sewer rescued in Quezon City

A man who was trapped in a sewer has been rescued by barangay authorities in Quezon City.

According to Marisol Abdurahman's report on "24 Oras," first responders had difficulty trying to lift a heavy manhole cover to free the man in Barangay Tatlon in Quezon City.

They tried different tools to try to get the man out.

Eventually, the man was successfully rescued from the sewers. GMA News tried asking the man multiple times why he was in the sewers, but he declined to answer. Officials took the man to the barangay hall.

Barangay officials said that the man had come from a former live-in partner’s birthday the night prior.

“Nung kinausap namin yung kinakasama niya po, matagal na silang wala, so parang yung lalaki, hindi matanggap ata yung nangyari sa kanila ng kinakasama, parang nagkaroon ata ng depresyon,” Barangay Chair Kiko Del Mundo said.

(When we talked to the live-in partner, they have been separated for a while, so the man, it seems he could not accept what happened to them; he got depressed.)

However, Del Mundo is suspicious of this explanation, asking how the man ended up in the sewer.

“Pag-tumalon ka kasi sa San Juan River, diretso na ’yan sa San Juan River, dadaan ka na sa Araneta, E. Rod, pero ba’t napunta ka diyan… baka mamaya, member siya ng isang kilalang grupo na gumagawa ng underground na, kung tawagin na termite gang,” Del Mundo said.

(When you jump in the San Juan River, it goes straight to the San Juan River; you would pass through Araneta, E. Rod, but why did he end up there? Maybe later, it could be that he is a member of a known underground group, what you call the termite gang.)

The termite gang refers to criminals who rob establishments by going through sewers and making holes from under the businesses.

The man was found in a sewer that was near a pawnshop.
