Sonic the Hedgehog's movie future is great news for one underrated hero, who has a much stronger chance of showing up on the big screen soon. Sonic the Hedgehog movies have become a staple of the video game franchise in the 2020s thanks to both high box office performance and positive reviews from critics and fans alike. The next film is Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which will introduce Amy and Metal Sonic to the fray, arriving in theaters on March 19, 2027. But it's only the beginning for the movies' extensive plans.
Paramount Pictures has also announced another movie in the Sonic franchise will arrive in theaters on December 22, 2028. While details about the forthcoming spinoff have yet to be revealed, it's implied the focus won't be on Sonic, but instead another character. This has led to speculation that Shadow the Hedgehog will be its primary focus, but nothing has been confirmed by either Paramount or Sega. What has been confirmed, however, is long-term plans for the movie universe that stretch far beyond the two announced films.
In September 2026, Sega released a Licensing Source Book for Sonic the Hedgehog's 35th anniversary. In the book was a prospective timeline for the future of the franchise, with a core focus on the movie universe. This includes a line that outright states there will be "more movies" after 2028's untitled spinoff. Although there's no confirmation what these movies could be, they open the door for endless possibilities on the big screen. This includes the arrival of one unsung hero who deserves another shot in the spotlight.
Sonic's Future Movie Plans Are Incomplete Without Silver The Hedgehog
If Sonic's movie universe is going to be a long-term tentpole element of the franchise, then it only makes sense to introduce Silver the Hedgehog. First appearing in 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog, Silver is a telekinetic hedgehog from a dark future who travels back in time to stop a disaster caused by the mysterious Iblis Trigger. As his character has evolved over the years, he's become a core part of Sonic's friend group, always fighting threats in the present day to save his future from falling to ruin.
Silver has been a side character for a number of key Sonic video games, his most recent major appearance being in 2017's Sonic Forces. However, he continues to be a popular character in the franchise, especially in the ongoing IDW comics that are canon to the games. Often paired with Blaze the Cat, Sliver has become one of the core hedgehogs in the franchise, right alongside Sonic and Shadow. Him being so recognizable makes him the perfect next step for the series' theatrical universe.
How Silver's Arrival Can Be Set Up In Sonic 4
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 already has the perfect setup for introducing Silver, and it all has to do with Amy and Metal Sonic's arrival. In the games, the pair debut in Sonic CD, which has a plot involving mystical artifacts called the Time Stones. The Stones allow for time manipulation on the game's core setting, Little Planet, while also allowing users to travel through time. Although it's unconfirmed if the Time Stones will be in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, they would be the perfect way for the movie universe to introduce Silver.
With the movie universe planned to last long past the announced films, Silver's introduction feels like an inevitability. Although there's still no confirmation as to what will happen beyond the untitled spinoff, it's clear Sega and Paramount have plenty of plans in store for fans. Silver feels like the next logical step in the plan, especially if the Time Stones become relevant in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. For now, though, it remains to be seen just how Sonic the Hedgehog's movie universe will play out from here.
