MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Obet, which is in the “near-super typhoon” category, entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Monday afternoon, the state weather bureau said.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Obet was first monitored inside the PAR at 1:20 p.m.

Pagasa advised the public to monitor its cyclone updates starting at 5 p.m. Monday.

As of 11 a.m., Obet was located 1,480 kilometers east-northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon.

The bureau earlier said the typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gustiness of up to 215 kph, noting that it “is currently at near-super typhoon category.”

Pagasa classifies a cyclone as a super typhoon if its maximum sustained winds exceed 185 kph. /mcm
