(Asiad) S. Korean stars Oh Sang-uk, Hwang Sun-woo set for title bids at Asian Games

NAGOYA, Japan, Sept. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korean fencing and swimming stars Oh Sang-uk and Hwang Sun-woo will compete for Asian Games titles on the piste and in the pool at this year's Asiad in Japan on Wednesday.

Oh is one of South Korea's most decorated fencers, having won multiple Olympic gold medals and world championship titles.

At the Asian Games, he won the team title in 2018, and swept the individual and team sabre titles in 2023.

In Nagoya, Oh will aim to sweep the men's individual and team sabre gold medals again, as he did at the Paris Olympics two years ago.

On the women's side, Park Ji-hee and Mo Byeol-i will compete in the women's individual foil event, seeking podium finishes.

In swimming, Hwang will pursue his second straight gold in the men's 200-meter freestyle, with his teammate Kim Woo-min also competing in the event.

After winning the title at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, Hwang endured a slump and failed to reach the final at the 2024 Olympics. However, he turned things around with a new Asian record last year and will seek to defend his Asian Games title.

In shooting, reigning Olympic champion Oh Ye-jin will target her first Asian Games gold both in the women's 10m air pistol individual and team events.

World No. 1 badminton player An Se-young will play in the semifinals of the women's team event against the host Japan as part of her campaign to win two titles at the Asian Games.

The baseball team will play against Thailand in its final group-round game.
