In short:

Severe thunderstorms have resulted in large hailstones and tree damage across Adelaide on Sunday.

The State Emergency Service responded to more than 100 calls for assistance.

What's next?

The Bureau of Meteorology said storm activity would continue across South Australia on Monday.

Damaging winds and hailstones have caused damage across Adelaide overnight, with trees blocking roads and falling onto vehicles.

More than 100 calls for help were received by the State Emergency Service since Sunday afternoon, with 80 per cent of reports due to fallen trees.

Vale Park resident Niall Dowdell had returned home after a trip to the Barossa to celebrate his wedding anniversary when the storm blew through.

"It just came through pretty rapidly," he said.

When he went outside to move his car to safety, he was greeted by a large tree that had fallen onto the front of his car.

"We heard a bit of thunder and then the rain just came in really heavy and then within a couple of minutes I've come out and the tree's down on my car," Mr Dowdell said.

"I think maybe a lightning strike's hit the tree."

Several storms crossed South Australia and metropolitan Adelaide on Sunday afternoon, mostly clearing by 9pm.

The SES reported 3 centimetres of hailstones fell at Happy Valley at 7:45 pm yesterday.

SES duty officer Ian Bonython said the majority of its call-outs were in Adelaide's north, and had largely ended by the night.

Multiple reports of fallen trees occurred across Adelaide's inner north-east from Payneham towards Paradise yesterday.

The Bureau of Meteorology said storm activity would continue across South Australia on Monday.

"Still seeing a lot of cloud, showers and certainly still some rumbles of thunder but we will continue to see it contract into north-eastern parts of the state today," said Urshla Connor, senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology.
