Andrew Scott to Receive Mill Valley Film Festival’s Acting Award for ‘Elsinore’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Andrew Scott will receive the Mill Valley Film Festival‘s Acting Award for his latest performance in “Elsinore.”

Scott stars in the Focus Features film portraying Ian Charleson in his celebrated performance as Hamlet at London’s National Theatre, before the actor, known for starring in “Chariots of Fire,” died at the peak of the AIDS crisis in 1990.

Directed by Simon Stone and produced by Scott, “Elsinore” tells the deeply emotional and inspirational true story of the late Charleson, a gifted actor whose greatest challenge becomes his greatest triumph. “Facing his own mortality with unflinching honesty, wit, and grace,” the film’s synopsis explains, “Charleson delivers a courageous performance that becomes a source of healing and inspiration for those around him.” Focus will release “Elsinore,” also starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman, in theaters on Nov. 20.

MVFF49 takes place Oct. 1-11 across venues in Marin County and the Bay Area. The California Film Institute, a nonprofit that also runs the DocLands Documentary Film Festival, presents the festival. Scott’s Actor Award presentation will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Smith Rafael Film Center as part of MVFF49’s Spotlight program, which recognizes standout work by film artists at any stage in their career.

“Devastating and miraculous, Andrew Scott gives the performance of a lifetime as an actor racing mortality to claim Hamlet before the curtain falls,” said Mark Fishkin, founder and director of the Mill Valley Film Festival, in a statement. “Olivia Colman quietly breaks your heart as the only one who knows the truth. Urgent, unforgettable, and deeply moving.”

The festival’s artistic director Rose Kuo added: “Andrew Scott’s interpretation of Ian Charleson’s Hamlet, the most death-haunted of tragic heroes, is witty, superbly passionate, and profoundly moving, becoming a meditation on mortality and the art of acting itself.”

Variety chief awards editor Clayton Davis declared that playing Charleson in “Elsinore” is “the role of Scott’s career” and could land him his first best actor Oscar nomination, recognition that has eluded the actor thus far, including a notable snub for his shattering turn in “All of Us Strangers.”

The Mill Valley award is the latest accolade for Scott, who previously won SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Award for his role in “Fleabag” and three Olivier Awards for “Vanya,” “A Girl in a Car with a Man” and “Present Laughter.” In 2024, he earned Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations for starring in Netflix’s “Ripley.” He also became the first person to win Critics Circle lead actor prizes in both film and theater in the same year for “All of Us Strangers” and “Vanya.”

Scott most recently starred in Focus’s “Pressure,” opposite Oscar winner Brendan Fraser, as well as the third installment of the “Knives Out” franchise, “Wake Up Dead Man” and Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon,” which earned Scott the Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Bear award (for best supporting performance), ahead of the film’s Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Next year, he stars in “A Place in Hell” for Neon, alongside Michelle Williams and Daisy Edgar-Jones. He recently wrapped production on Netflix’s “Walk the Blue Fields” opposite Emily Blunt, and Justine Triet’s next film, “Fonda,” alongside Mia Goth.
