Religious minister calls for review of dramas with ‘sensual scenes’

Religious affairs minister Zulkifli Hasan has called for a comprehensive review of the screening of several dramas featuring “sensual scenes” and “manipulative elements”, whether presented in the name of art or social awareness.

Zulkifli said that although the intention was to convey reality, the intended educational message would be overshadowed by provocative marketing presentations. The circulation of clips featuring “overly explicit scenes” on social media could “normalise harmful behaviour” in society and “negatively affect the emotional development and character of teenagers”.

“Those in the creative industry and media platforms are reminded not to prioritise viewership figures and commercial profits over the values and principles that uphold faith,” he said.

Zulkifli’s statement comes two days after he said the government was reviewing the screening of the 12-part drama series Madu atau Racun over “elements touching on religious sensitivities and local cultural norms”.

Yesterday, the Chinese video streaming platform iQIYI said it had temporarily removed all six episodes which have been released, and postponed the screening of the remaining six episodes. All 12 episodes would undergo editing and a content review before returning to the platform, the Malay Mail reported.

Zulkifli said guidelines drawn up by the Islamic development department (Jakim) for the screening of Islamic-themed content would be strengthened. “Great art is art that touches the soul without crossing the boundaries set by shariah,” he said.
