Stargate SG-1 Officially Switched Genres For Its Long-Awaited Return, To Mixed Results

Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond.

Stargate SG-1 remains one of science fiction television's defining cult classics, transforming the premise of 1994's Stargate movie into an expansive universe filled with alien civilizations and unforgettable characters. Running for 10 seasons across an entire decade from 1997 to 2007, the series helped turn Stargate into a full-on franchise, eventually spawning Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, movies, games, and multiple other spin-offs.

Yet despite its devoted fanbase, the franchise has spent more than a decade struggling to find its way back to live-action television. Part of that comes down to changing ownership, with shifting studio priorities over the years and multiple revival attempts that never made it to the screen. Even a new Amazon MGM series announced in November 2025 was cancelled before production began in June 2026, although reports indicate the studio hasn't abandoned the IP altogether.

For longtime fans, the wait to step through the Stargate and back into the SG-1 timeline finally came to an end, albeit in an unexpected new medium, and the long-awaited return also came with a surprising shift in genre. Unfortunately, fans have been a bit underwhelmed by Stargate SG-1's official return.

Stargate SG-1 Switches Genres Completely In Official Return

  • Stargate SG-1 characters being given a mission.
  • Urgo Stargate SG-1

After years of waiting, Stargate SG-1 has technically made its official return with Stargate: Timekeepers, but in a genre completely unlike the television series fans remember. Released for PC on January 23, 2024, Timekeepers transforms SG-1 into a real-time tactics strategy game built around stealth and controlling a squad of specialists as opposed to the action-adventure format you'd expect from the show.

The return was a long time coming, as Stargate: Continuum, the final live-action adventure featuring the SG-1 team, released in 2008, meaning Timekeepers debuted more than 15 years after SG-1's last live-action story. Even in gaming, there had been an enormous gap, with Stargate SG-1: Unleashed releasing for mobile in 2013, making Timekeepers the first major new Stargate game in nearly 11 years.

Timekeepers also firmly connects itself to the original series, with a story that branches from the end of SG-1 Season 7. It begins during the Battle of Antarctica before following Commander Eva McCain and a new team through an original 14-mission campaign involving the Goa'uld, Jaffa Resistance, and Unas. It's an unusual continuation of SG-1, and one that has been met with very mixed reactions so far, with many fans not sold on the concept and others absolutely loving it.

Stargate: Timekeepers Reactions Have Been Mixed

Unfortunately, Stargate: Timekeepers hasn't proven to be the triumphant return to SG-1 that fans were hoping for. The game currently carries a "Mixed" rating on Steam, with only 60% of its low 198 counted user reviews being positive, highlighting just how divisive this new direction for the franchise has been.

Much of that division comes from the gameplay itself. Some negative Steam reviews criticize Timekeepers' heavy emphasis on stealth, with players taking issue with enemy AI, controls, limited customization, and the trial-and-error nature of missions. Some negative reviews argue that its stealth systems ultimately make encounters feel more like puzzles that need to be solved in a particular sequence than open-ended tactical scenarios.

There is plenty of praise as well, however, particularly from players who already enjoy games such as Commandos, Desperados 3, and Shadow Tactics. Positive reviewers have highlighted the level design, character abilities, nostalgic Stargate elements, and the simple pleasure of finally exploring the SG-1 universe again. Several also acknowledge its rough edges, including bugs and comparatively modest production values.

Timekeepers may be something of a niche return for Stargate, landing as a welcome revival for some longtime SG-1 fans, but hardly the universally embraced comeback many had spent years awaiting. That said, you can check it out on Steam now and see for yourself.
