Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - Hundreds of mountain climbers and nature enthusiasts raised a giant Indonesian Red-White Flag at the peak of Mount Sangar in Bandung District, West Java Province, to mark the 81st anniversary of Indonesia's independence.

"We are commemorating the 81st anniversary of Indonesia's independence by flying the giant Indonesian flag, measured at 40x20 meters, at Mount Sangar," Argia Puspa Swani, the event organiser head, said here on Monday.

The event organised by several nature enthusiast organisations of a total 500 participants, including 100 organising volunteers and hundreds of mountaineers and nature enthusiasts.

At the same occasion, Rizky Priyadi, a person in charge of the event, said the event aimed to strengthen a sense of nationalism whilst raising environmental awareness amongst nature lovers.

"Our first purpose is to motivate fellow nature enthusiasts to love nature more. The second purpose is to instill our love for Indonesia," Priyadi said.

The Monday event followed a similar activity earlier when a 1,000-meter-long Red-White Flag was unfurled.

Priyadi revealed such activities would continue and were planned to become an annual event, as an expression of nationalism among the younger generation during Independence Day.

Moreover, Aqila Kemal Irtiza, a participant from Bandung District, joined the event to witness the raising of the giant Indonesian flag at the peak of Mount Sangar.

"I feel by raising the 40-meter flag makes this Indonesia's independence commemoration day to be more festive. I also hear the recitation of a poem about the struggle of Indonesian heroes at that time, making me appreciate this independence day more," Irtiza remarked.
