Yellow Level 2 warning issued for severe thunderstorms in KZN

Translate

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, 25 October, with possible flooding, hail and damage to infrastructure.

The warning will remain in effect from 10:00 until 22:59 on Sunday.

SAWS expects isolated showers and thundershowers across most of the province, except the extreme north-east.

However, thunderstorms could become severe over central and eastern KwaZulu-Natal, increasing the risk of localised damage.

What can residents expect?

According to SAWS, a deepening surface trough extending from the KwaZulu-Natal interior will create conditions favourable for thunderstorms.

The weather service warns that severe thunderstorms could cause localised damage to infrastructure and settlements.

Heavy downpours could also flood roads and bridges in vulnerable areas, while slippery roads and poor visibility could increase the risk of minor vehicle accidents.

Motorists travelling on dirt roads could face particularly difficult driving conditions.

SAWS also warns that some areas could experience large amounts of small hail or large hail.

Staying safe during severe thunderstorms

Residents should monitor weather updates throughout Sunday, particularly those living in areas prone to flooding.

Motorists should reduce their speed when visibility drops and avoid driving through flooded roads.

People spending time outdoors should seek shelter in a substantial building when thunderstorms approach and avoid open areas during lightning.

SAWS advises residents to follow its latest warnings as conditions develop.
