Translate

Kenya has achieved a historic milestone after Nairobi was selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, making it the first African city to stage the prestigious global athletics event.

Nairobi won the hosting rights after beating competing bids from London and Rome. The decision is a major moment for Kenya, a country renowned for its long-standing dominance in middle- and long-distance running and its rich athletics tradition.

The 2029 championships are expected to bring the world's best athletes to Kenya, giving fans across Africa the opportunity to watch the sport's biggest stars compete on home soil. The event will also provide Kenya with an opportunity to showcase its athletics culture, infrastructure and tourism to a global audience.

Meanwhile, Munich, Germany, has been selected to host the 2031 World Athletics Championships. The 2027 edition will be held in Beijing, China.

Nairobi's successful bid represents a landmark achievement for African athletics and could open the door for more major international sporting events to be staged on the continent.
