She has interviewed countless celebrities, including Anne Hathaway, Halle Berry, Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Brenda Song, and is known for her encyclopedic knowledge of film, TV, and pop culture.

In the world of mystery-writing, no author is as famous and beloved as Agatha Christie. From And Then There Were None (1939) to Murder on the Orient Express (1934), the late writer captivated readers with her complex characters, unraveling mysteries and eccentric lead characters who carried the stories. Plus, her narrative twists guaranteed an unexpected ride for the reader that always proved to be worthwhile by the end.

But while Christie's novels continue to be adapted on the small screen, including in the upcoming series Hercule about Hercule Poirot, starring Edward Bluemel, some other mystery shows and TV movies have been able to deliver on the same thrill over the years. Among them is Harry Price: Ghost Hunter, a 2015 two-part TV movie first released by ITV. While bringing in elements of the supernatural world, and a lead who's putting on a façade (much like Simon Baker's Patrick Jane in The Mentalist), the story hooks viewers from the very beginning, and delivers a compelling, well-constructed mystery, much like Christie's.

What Is 'Harry Price: Ghost Hunter' About?

Harry Price: Ghost Hunter stars Rafe Spall as Harry Price, a real-life paranormal investigator and skeptic. "I approach the study of the preternatural: spiritualism, hauntings, apparitions," he says in the trailer. Set in 1920s London, the drama follows Price during a difficult period in his career, when he has resorted to posing as a medium and staging fake séances. After one of his fraudulent investigations ends in tragedy, Price gets an opportunity to redeem himself when he is hired to investigate a disturbing case involving Edward Goodwin (Tom Ward), a rising politician whose wife, Grace (Zoe Boyle), has been exhibiting increasingly bizarre behavior and believes their home is haunted.

With his reputation and Goodwin's political future on the line, Price teams up with the family's housemaid, Sarah Grey (Cara Theobold), to uncover the truth behind the alleged haunting. As they investigate the history of the Goodwin residence, they discover that the house was once a workhouse where a young boy was murdered. The pair must determine whether Grace's experiences stem from psychological distress, secrets hidden within the household, or something genuinely supernatural. Blending historical fiction, mystery, and supernatural thriller elements, the film explores Price's struggle to distinguish deception from the unexplained while attempting to make amends for his past.

From the synopsis alone, viewers might already be flocking to press play. After all, by placing a fake paranormal investigator as its lead, the movie sets itself up to not only unravel a central mystery, but to challenge the main protagonist, one who might start off as a skeptic, but quickly change his views as the movie goes on. Of course, that's only heightened with Spall's performance, an actor who's gone on to become one of Britain's biggest actors, starring in TV shows and movies like Trying, Under the Salt Marsh, and The Ritual (2017). On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has some viewers raving. "Clever and well-acted sleuth-ghost story that strikes an eerie balance between the here and after. Eagerly awaiting the next case!" wrote one review. "Great ghost film, atmospheric and acting was great," echoed another.

Ultimately, while Harry Price: Ghost Hunter didn't come from the mind of the one and only Agatha Christie, the two-part, 120-minute TV movie is a must-watch for her fans. With a period setting, a complex protagonist, and a mind-mending mystery at its heart, the movie strikes the balance, and delivers on Christie's signature charm.
