When the Memphis Grizzlies took Cameron Boozer third overall in June, one of the first people he hugged was his girlfriend, Yva Lauren Cao. The two have been together since their high school days in Miami, and she has followed his rise from Duke to the NBA, where he has already put up a triple-double in just his fifth game. Cao is a cheerleader at the University of Miami, and her family is well known in the city for its bakery.
Yva Lauren Cao grew up around her family's bakery
Cao was raised in Miami by Cuban parents who founded the Cuban bakery chain Cao Bakery. On LinkedIn, she has said the business gave her a strong work ethic and sparked her interest in marketing and PR, which she now studies at the University of Miami.
At Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, she was a cheer captain and made the Miami Herald's First Team All-County. She joined the Miami Hurricanes cheer squad in 2025. She shares travel clips, game-day routines and videos with Boozer on TikTok and Instagram, though her Instagram following is only a little over 3,000.
A high school romance that has gone the distance
Boozer and Cao started dating in August 2023. He was at Christopher Columbus High School and she was at Lourdes, but they went to several proms and homecoming dances together, the last in May 2025. On their first anniversary, she posted, “A year with my favorite blessing.”
Boozer then went to Duke while Cao stayed in Miami, so they kept things going from a distance. She still backed him, even as a cheerleader for a rival school. Before this year's March Madness, she flew out to surprise him, and she has worn custom Duke boots with “Boozer” written on them. He returned the favour by helping hand out baked goods at her family's bakery, in a pink T-shirt like the rest of the Cao family.
On draft night, Cao wrote that “Memphis gained the best there is,” adding that his talent is undeniable but who he is makes her proudest. Since then, she has posted photos of the two in front of his new locker and No. 27 jersey in Memphis. The couple have no children and are both busy with their careers.
