Bureau warns against Danjiang Bridge antics

People who vandalize or climb the Danjiang Bridge without authorization could face fines of up to NT$300,000, the Highway Bureau said yesterday.
The bridge, which connects New Taipei City’s Tamsui (淡水) and Bali (八里) districts, officially opened to traffic on May 12. Its surrounding scenery has also become a popular spot for taking photographs and checking in on social media.
The Northern Region Branch of the Highway Bureau said in a statement that the bridge is an important transportation landmark linking Tamsui and Bali.

Graffiti or other damage, as well as unauthorized climbing is prohibited throughout the bridge area, including the main bridge, approach roads, pedestrian facilities and bicycle paths, it said.
Graffiti and other acts of vandalism damage public facilities, and undermine the bridge’s visual appeal and surrounding environment, the branch said, adding that it would step up patrols in cooperation with police and use surveillance equipment to monitor the area.
People found using highway land or facilities without authorization, or causing damage would be fined NT$60,000 to NT$300,000 as stipulated by Article 72 of the Highway Act (公路法), the branch said.
People should help protect the bridge and its facilities, as the landmark serves transportation and recreational purposes, it said.
People who witness vandalism or other illegal acts should immediately report them to authorities, it added.
