Fire leaves 18 families homeless in Bohol town

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — At least 12 houses were destroyed and 18 families were left without homes after a fire broke out in Barangay Napo

in Loon town, Bohol, on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The fire started shortly after 7 a.m. in Purok 3, according to Senior Fire Officer 3 Gregorio Langcamon Jr., fire marshal of the Loon Fire Station.

The fire started at a house owned by a certain Neria Buna, which was being rented by a female student of Bohol Island State University (BISU)-Calape.

Strong winds brought by the southwest monsoon, or habagat, and the close spacing of houses contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Many of the affected houses were also made of light materials, according to the fire marshal.

Firefighters from the Loon Fire Station responded to the blaze, with personnel from the Calape Fire Station joining the firefighting operation. Local residents also helped in efforts to contain the flames.

The firefighting operation lasted nearly three hours before the fire was completely put off.

The BFP-Loon is still investigating the cause of the fire. Authorities are looking into the possible involvement of a lampshade and other electrical equipment that were reportedly left plugged in.

The total amount of damage is still being assessed.

No fatalities or injuries were reported.

Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado immediately directed the provincial government to extend assistance to the families affected by the fire.

The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office distributed food and non-food essentials to help address the immediate needs of the displaced families.
