Michael Strahan almost lost it on his own podcast, Hustle Like You're Broke, this week. The Pro Football Hall of Famer was talking to Eli Manning, his old quarterback with the New York Giants, when the emotion caught up with him. Strahan credits one booking mix-up for the career that followed his playing days. Manning was supposed to appear on a daytime talk show. He went to Disney World instead. That gap in the schedule landed a retired defensive end in a national television chair he never planned to sit in. It changed his life.

Michael Strahan Took Eli Manning's Spot On Live! With Regis And Kelly

Strahan played four seasons alongside Manning. The 2007 run ended with a 17-14 Super Bowl XLII win over the previously undefeated New England Patriots. Manning won MVP. Strahan retired. Case closed, you would think.

It wasn't. Manning had a slot on Live! with Regis and Kelly, but his MVP victory tour pointed him toward Disney World. Strahan stepped in. Constance Schwartz-Morini, who co-hosts the podcast and is his longtime business partner, brought up that detail during the episode.

One guest appearance became several. By September 2012, Strahan was Kelly Ripa's permanent co-host, and he stayed until 2016. Two Daytime Emmy Awards came with the job.

Strahan made no effort to hide what it meant to him.

"I'm not going to cry right now but I do say Eli changed my life," Strahan said on the podcast. "I tell him this all the time. My life would not be the same had we not won a Super Bowl. There would have been no reason to go on the show when Regis (Philbin) took a break and go fill in for Regis, or to go on with Regis and Kelly... Thank you, Eli. You changed my life."

Michael Strahan fought back emotions as he said, "Eli Manning saved my life." It is time to get over being upset with our guy. Shout out to 92. #BigBlue  (HLYB IG) https://t.co/YXcsv4V4PL

Think about how small that opening was. A free seat, a busy quarterback, a producer who needed a name. Plenty of athletes wait years for a break like that, and Strahan got his by accident.

Eli Manning Explains Why A Super Bowl Bond Never Fades

Manning, a two-time Super Bowl MVP, has lived the other side of that story. He did not talk about fame or rings as trophies. He talked about people.

"The guys that you win a championship with, the coaches, everybody in that locker room, there's a special bond that you have," Manning said. "When you see them, maybe you hadn't seen them in five or 10 years, or maybe you text every once in a while and then you see them, it's an automatic hug."

He pointed to the stretch that makes it stick.

"Just that month, that extra month of playoffs and road games and Super Bowl week and winning that championship and then being in the parades and getting your rings and all those moments are so special. It's life-changing for everybody in that and so that's a bond you can't break."

Strahan later moved on to Good Morning America and Fox NFL Sunday, so his media résumé speaks for itself. The full episode is on the Hustle Like You're Broke YouTube channel and all major podcast platforms.
