AI can boost Indonesia's strategic global position: deputy minister
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to propel Indonesia into a strategic global position across data, energy, infrastructure, and human capacity, according to Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Stella Christie.
Stella emphasized that Indonesia possesses the necessary foundation—including policies, digital infrastructure, talent, and abundant renewable energy reserves—to build a sovereign AI ecosystem.
"Indonesia has a tremendous opportunity; we possess the infrastructure, policies, and talent," Stella said in a statement on Monday.
"Indonesia also holds immense renewable energy potential. We can succeed and advance if we approach this collaboratively,” she added.
Stella outlined that AI relies on three core pillars: computing power, data, and algorithms.
In terms of data, Indonesia's massive population provides a vast ecosystem asset, though she stressed that this must be matched by robust data protection and governance across public and private sectors.
To bolster national computing capacity, Stella advocated for strategic investments in sustainable data centers powered by Indonesia's abundant renewable energy reserves.
As global AI energy demands surge, positioning Indonesia as a green computing provider could secure national technological sovereignty.
"If we can become a supplier, we secure a strategic position. We will not simply be controlled by others; instead, we will possess sovereignty," she noted.
However, the cognitive psychology expert also cautioned that rapid AI adoption presents challenges regarding trust and decision-making—stressing that human understanding of context, values, and ethics must guide technological integration.
