While the original Battlestar Galactica series debuted in 1978, it was the critically acclaimed 2004 reboot that brought the franchise to an expansive new audience and took the story to the next level. Despite never becoming as popular or highly regarded as shows like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica has a dedicated cult following that has been holding on to hope for a proper modern revival.

More than 17 years after the reboot concluded, fans are still waiting for Battlestar Galactica's next major on-screen release. Hopes for a revival surged when a new series from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail was announced, only for Peacock to abandon the project in 2024 after years of development. With no confirmed replacement on the horizon, fans have been left wondering when, or even if, the beloved franchise will finally return.

Fortunately, Battlestar Galactica hasn't been forgotten or abandoned entirely. While its long-awaited television comeback remains uncertain, the franchise has officially entered an exciting new era thanks to a release that gives longtime fans a fresh opportunity to experience its iconic universe in an entirely different way.

Battlestar Galactica has officially entered a brand-new era with the release of Scattered Hopes, a strategy game that brings the beloved science fiction franchise back to life in an exciting new format. Developed by Alt Shift and published by Dotemu, the game launched on May 11, 2026, offering fans a fresh opportunity to experience humanity's desperate struggle against the Cylons.

Scattered Hopes introduces an original experience set within the universe of the acclaimed 2004 reboot. Players assume command of a fleet of human survivors following the destruction of the Twelve Colonies, desperately attempting to escape the pursuing Cylons and reunite with the legendary Battlestar Galactica.

According to its official Steam description, Scattered Hopes is "a survival fleet-management roguelite" that combines tactical space battles with difficult leadership decisions. Players must manage their limited resources, dispatch expeditions to gather supplies, upgrade their ships, and train their crews while preparing for increasingly dangerous encounters with the Cylons.

Players also have to contend with political disputes, medical emergencies, equipment failures, and even the possibility of civil war. There's also the ever-present threat of Cylon infiltrators hiding among the survivors, with the Steam description warning that "investigating suspects will cost resources" as players attempt to uncover the enemy within.

Combat introduces another layer of strategy, with real-time battles that allow players to pause the action and coordinate their squadrons. "Each encounter is about survival, not victory." Players must hold off overwhelming Cylon forces long enough to make an FTL jump to safety. The roguelite structure also encourages repeated playthroughs and adds to replayability, with different starting fleets, unlockable equipment, permanent upgrades, and challenging difficulty settings.

Fortunately, Scattered Hopes has enjoyed a largely positive reception since its release. On Steam, roughly 76% of more than 1,000 user reviews are positive, earning the game a "Mostly Positive" rating. Critical reception has also been great, with Scattered Hopes currently holding a 77/100 Metascore on Metacritic, including several individual reviews awarding scores of 8/10 or higher.

Although it's not the long-awaited television revival fans have been hoping for, Scattered Hopes is an encouraging new chapter for Battlestar Galactica. More importantly, its positive launch shows that there's still an audience eager to explore the franchise's universe, potentially opening the door for more ambitious gaming projects in the future.
