Australia v Bangladesh LIVE: Bangladesh dig deep after ripping through Australia; Gardner apologises to her ex

Todd Greenberg addressed the Ash Gardner-Georgia Voll relationship on SEN during the lunch break and said additional policies have been put in place by Cricket Australia to ensure there are no conflicts of interest at selection given Gardner remains Australian vice-captain.

“It is a very personal matter for the player, and I think there’s a level of respect that needs to go with that,” the Cricket Australia CEO said. “Cricket’s got very strong respect-at-work policies, so we’ve got a policy that’s been developed over time that can deal with these sorts of things.

“Ash is a highly regarded leader in our system. The CA board make leadership decisions and have oversight over all leadership decisions. Ash is our vice-captain for a reason, because she’s highly regarded, but what we will do is in situations where there are personal relationships, is make sure there are additional guardrails, so the perception of conflict or conflict itself, talking about things like selection, are handled appropriately and respectfully.

“We’ve got policies in place but we will put additional ones in place given Ash is now vice-captain. If there are relationships that have been disclosed and they have been, then we will make sure that conflict – perceived or real – around selections are removed, so Ash is not involved in those things.

“It was new news in the media, but for those that were in the team and leading the team, we’ve been well across this for a period of time.”

Greenberg reiterated that the episode did not influence the decision to appoint Sophie Molineux captain, ahead of Gardner, earlier this year.

Steve Smith is Australia’s last hope for a substantial first innings tally after Bangladesh had the better of the first two sessions of the first Test in Darwin.

The hosts lost another four wickets between lunch and tea, all falling after mid-afternoon drinks which may have broken the concentration of Alex Carey.

Australia’s downfall was essentially the inability to handle disciplined and consistent bowling of no great pace on a nippy pitch reminiscent of many Sheffield Shield surfaces in recent seasons.

Australia 8-183 off 48 overs. Smith 67 (96), Lyon 0 (3)

Mitchell Starc is out. The left-hander tries to drive a ball outside off and edges it to the keeper.

Australia are now 8-176. Nathan Lyon joins Steve Smith at the crease.

Two big questions now: Can Smith get a century, can Australia pass 200?

Australia 8-176 off 47. Smith 60 (92), Lyon 0 (1)

Pat Cummins is out, falling for nine, and Australia are 7-172.

The skipper was trying to push the score along, trying to slash a wide ball from Hasan Mahmud, but edged it to the keeper. Hasan now has 3-49 to be the best of the touring side’s bowlers.

It brings Mitchell Starc to the crease, alongside Steve Smith who his 59 off 90 balls and eyeing off a century. Can the tailenders – Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon – provide enough support to get the Australian No.4 to triple figures? I wouldn’t bet on it.

Australia 7-174. Smith 59 (90), Starc 1 (5).

In any given Test match, Australia will have been seen to fall short in this first innings. They are 6-171 and have regularly lost wickets on a green-tinged pitch that has offered sideways movement and a slightly varied bounce.

But, 200 could be plenty against Test minnows Bangladesh, especially against the Australian bowling attack of Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon.

“I feel if they can keep them under, say 220, 230, they would be a good chance. A real good chance,” David Warner said of the Bangladesh side on Kayo Sports.

Australia 6-171. Smith 57 (87), Cummins 9 (18).

Steve Smith has been a shining light on a bleak day for the Australian batters against Bangladesh in Darwin.

He brings up a half century in an innings that the next top scorer is Jake Weatherald, who fell for 23.

This is Smith’s third Test against Bangladesh and to date he has not scored a century against the cricketing minnow. If he gets to triple figures, it will be well earned as the Bangladesh bowlers have been on the money, extracting seam movement from a green-tinged wicket.

Australia 6-162. Smith 55 (79), Cummins 2 (8).

Bangladesh are into the Australian lower order with Alex Carey and Beau Webster both bowled in quick succession after mid-afternoon drinks.

Taskin Ahmed’s delivery to Webster was a beauty, straightening enough off the pitch to beat Webster on the outside and flick off stump.

Pat Cummins comes to the middle needing a partnership with his deputy Smith, and must be wondering why he chose to bat first.

Oh no. Beau Webster has been bowled. He is gone for 12 off 10, and Australia have slumped to 6-152.

It brings the skipper, Pat Cummins, to the crease, and we are into the tail.

Australia have made their way to 150 on a day their batters have struggled.

Steve Smith has helped steady a rocky ship - surviving a dropped catch earlier in the match - by edging towards 50. He is on 47 from 52 balls, while Beau Webster has raced to 12 off nine. Australia are 5-152 off 38.

Another wicket falls. Alex Carey has been bowled by the first ball after the drinks break. How often does that happen? The batters look to have settled in and then lose their way after a break in play.

It is a beautiful ball from Ebadot Hossain. He pitches on a length, and it comes back slightly to gate the wicketkeeper. And as Carey makes his way to the pavilion after making 19 from 43 balls, Ebadot salutes the crowd. He is pumped.

Australia are back on the ropes at 5-129, bringing Beau Webster to the crease. Steve Smith is on 37.

All-rounder Webster wastes little time, moving to seven off his first five balls.

Leading into this Darwin Test, you’d be expecting a glut of runs from the Aussies. Not so far.

Australia No.4 Steve Smith and No.6 Alex Carey have posted the first 50-run partnership of the home team’s innings, following a disappointing start to the match. They came together at 4-74.

Jake Weatherald posted just 23 from 37 balls to do nothing to cement his slot at the top of the order, and under-the-pump Cameron Green threw away his wicket on 13 to once again bring his spot in this team into question.

The teams have just broken for drinks. Australia 4-128 off 36 overs. Smith 37 (67), Carey 19 (42).
