Austin Reaves once told the Detroit Pistons not to draft him. In 2021, he reportedly asked them not to take him in the second round unless they would give him a guaranteed contract. They said no, he went undrafted, and he signed with the Lakers instead. Five years later, that gamble has paid off in a big way. This summer, he signed a four-year, $184.76 million contract, the biggest ever for an undrafted player, and his net worth is estimated at about $20 million. It all started with a two-way deal.
From A Two-Way Deal To $184.76 Million
The first paycheck was small. After going undrafted, Reaves signed a two-way contract with the Lakers in August 2021, and a month later he got a full two-year deal worth about $2.49 million.
His play soon outgrew it. In 2023, he signed a four-year, $53.8 million deal with a $14.9 million player option for 2026-27, which meant he could stay or leave after three seasons. In June, he turned the option down and went looking for more.
The Lakers moved fast. The new contract is fully guaranteed, and it pays him $41.24 million this season, then $42.95 million, $46.25 million and $49.55 million in 2029-30, a final year that carries a player option.
He has the numbers to back it up. Last season, at 28, he averaged 23.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds a game, even though injuries held him to 51 games. In October, he scored a career-high 51 points in a win at Sacramento.
He wasn't hiding how much the deal meant. “My heart was in L.A., and we got it done,” Reaves said.
Shoes, Golf And Hillbilly Bogey
Away from the court, his best-known deal is with Rigorer, a Chinese shoe company. He has his own signature shoe, which is rare for an undrafted player, and he reportedly gets an equity stake and more than a million dollars a year from it. He also works with Recover 180, TravisMathew and Lexus.
He has started his own golf-themed social media brand, Hillbilly Bogey.
Golf is where he heard the news, too. He was on a course with his girlfriend, Jenna Barber, when his agents told him the deal was done, and he dropped to the ground in relief. She shared the photo online.
Reaves says he takes life “day by day,” but the next four years are already set.
