Ambuklao, Binga dams gates open; Agno River Basin on flood watch

BAGUIO CITY — Ambuklao Dam in the Benguet town of Bokod had opened eight sluice gates as of Monday morning, Aug. 31, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Pagasa’s dam monitoring data showed that Ambuklao’s reservoir level was at 750.70 meters above sea level as of 8 a.m., or 1.30 meters below its normal high water level of 752 meters.

All eight gates had discharged water at 644.24 cubic meters per second through 5-meter openings.

Meanwhile, Binga Dam in Itogon, also in the Benguet mountains, had six gates open to ease reservoir pressure, with the water level measured at 574.37 masl as of 8 a.m. Monday. Binga had been discharging water at a rate of 410.40 cubic meters per second.

Pagasa’s Flood Information page lists both the Agno River Basin and the Ambuklao-Binga-San Roque sub-basin under Flood Watch.

Meanwhile, Pagasa’s 11 a.m. Heavy Rainfall Warning No. 21 said light to moderate, at times heavy, rains were being experienced in Bokod and other parts of Benguet and may persist for the next two to three hours.

The agency warned of possible flooding and landslides in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas and advised the public and concerned disaster risk reduction and management offices to monitor weather conditions and succeeding warnings. /mcm
