Jessica Lange Reveals She Plays a “Mystery” Fifth Character in ‘American Horror Story’ Season 13

Jessica Lange is making her grand return to American Horror Story by reprising all four of her previous roles — but that’s not all. She’s revealing that she’s playing another character as well.

Speaking with Good Morning America on Tuesday, Lange opened up about why she decided to come back to the series.

“It really was just the idea of bringing those four characters back — and one mystery character that I’m not going to [spoil],” she said.

Lange also teased that she wonders if fans may be able to guess who the mystery character is.

“There is a fifth character, but I won’t say who that is, and I’d be curious if anybody can figure it out,” she added.

Lange previously played Constance Langdon in season one’s Murder House, Sister Jude Martin in season two’s Asylum, Fiona Goode in season three’s Coven and Elsa Mars in season four’s Freak Show. Her performances in the anthology series earned her two Emmys: supporting actress in a miniseries or movie in 2012 for Murder House and lead actress in a miniseries or movie in 2014 for Coven. She was nominated for all four seasons.

Of those characters, Lange said she was most excited to play Elsa again. But when it comes to Murphy’s favorite, Lange said it’s Constance.

“She is featured pretty much throughout the whole thing,” Lange said of her Murder House character’s role in season 13.

Elsewhere, Lange spoke about how she’s also performing a musical number in season 13.

“He did promise a musical number for one of the characters,” Lange said of Murphy’s pitch to bring her back. “I have to beg, borrow and plead to get anybody to let me sing.”

Lange’s return to the horror anthology series came as a surprise to fans given that she said several times following her departure in 2015 that she would not return.

Evan Peters, a frequent castmember of the franchise who also played Lange’s onscreen son Tate Langdon in Murder House, told The Hollywood Reporter in January that he was “shocked” she returned.

“Ryan knows how to have those dinners. He will get you in a second. I was definitely shocked, but thrilled, honestly,” he said.
