23 dead as habagat, 'Luis,' 'Maymay' batter Philippines — OCD

MANILA, Philippines — The combined effects of tropical cyclones Luis, Maymay and the southwest monsoon or habagat have left 24 people dead, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Sunday, August 16.

As of 6 a.m., 15 of the deaths were recorded in Benguet, followed by Rizal and Batangas with three each. One death was reported in Quezon.

The fatalities were due to landslides, drowning, rockslides, a fallen tree and electrocution.

Seventeen people were also reported injured in Ilocos Sur, Benguet, Abra, Rizal and Cavite.

Three people from Batangas remained missing, according to the OCD.

The weather disturbances affected 1,410,800 families or 4,903,086 people in several parts of the country.

Affected areas included Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, CALABARZON, Cordillera Administrative Region, Metro Manila and MIMAROPA.

A total of 9,101 families or 31,456 people were staying in 407 evacuation centers.

The OCD also recorded damage to 1,845 houses, including 178 that were totally destroyed.

Agricultural damage from the weather disturbances has reached P689.66 million.

Meanwhile, two low pressure areas (LPA) were being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

As of 2 p.m., PAGASA said one LPA was unlikely to develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

Another LPA had a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression within the same period, according to the state weather bureau.
