Stranded dolphin rescued in Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY — Local responders rescued a dolphin stranded in shallow waters off Barangay Ul-og in Calubian, Leyte, and safely returned it to the sea on Monday.

Personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard, the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Calubian, and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) responded after the dolphin was reported at about 1 p.m.

The responders assessed the dolphin’s condition, took its measurements, and guided it toward deeper waters to ensure its safe return to the sea.

The dolphin was in generally good condition, except for a minor wound on its snout that responders said could have been caused by contact with rocks.

They said strong sea currents and winds could have disoriented the dolphin, which was found at low tide, causing it to stray into shallow waters.

The dolphin measured about 5 feet 9 inches long and 10 inches wide, with a body circumference of 32 inches.

After the assessment, the rescue team guided the dolphin back into deeper waters off Barangay Efe and released it./coa
