Can Pantev fix Richards Bay FC, or is relegation the future?

Richards Bay FC have moved quickly to replace their coach, but will he have enough time to turn things around?

The club confirmed on Monday (21 September) that Bulgarian tactician Dimitar Pantev had been appointed.

He joins the struggling club on a one-season deal, with the option to renew, and the timing really counts here.

The problem Dimitar Pantev needs to resolve

The new coach joins a club in crisis.

Ronnie Gabriel resigned as head coach last week, with the club in 14^th and level with relegation-threatened Siwelele FC.

This left assistant coach Siboniso Gumede in charge for the 2-3 loss to Sekhukhune United on Saturday, 19 September.

The Natal Rich Boys are winless after 7 games, recording 3 draws and 4 losses, according to the PSL website.

Before announcing Pantev’s appointment, the club was reportedly in talks with former TS Galaxy boss Adnan Beganovic and former Marumo Gallants handler Phuti Mohafe.

The bottom line is that the new coach will have very little time to adjust to the hot seat.

Richards Bay are in trouble on the league table, and their defensive record is one of the worst this season.

Having conceded 16 times and only scoring 9 times, Pantev may be expected to focus on reorganising the backline first.

Why Richards Bay is working against the clock

Pantev arrived during the international break, with his first match in charge only coming in mid-October, according to FlashScore.

However, travelling to Mamelodi Sundowns is not the debut many coaches would want.

Richards Bay have been defensively frail, despite a stubborn streak against stronger sides.

This adds to the pressure on Pantev: he gets a few weeks to work with his team, but his first true test will be against a team with continental pedigree.

The Bulgarian has some experience that shows he may be able to pull it off.

He led Simba SC into the CAF Champions League in 2025 and saw Orapa United into the CAF Confederation Cup in 2024.

Pantev’s experience includes work in Botswana, Cameroon, and Sierra Leone, and Bulgaria’s national futsal structures.

It remains to be seen how well this will translate to moving his new team to a safer log position.

With Richards Bay now on its second coaching change of the season, the clock is well and truly ticking.
