GEORGE TOWN: Four people were injured when a BMW collided with an oil tanker on the Penang Bridge.

The accident occurred at Km3.4 of the bridge's mainland-to-island bound carriageway at 12.13am.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said the four occupants of the BMW had been taken to hospital by members of the public before firefighters arrived.

The 53-year-old tanker driver escaped unhurt.

"We received the emergency call at 12.13am and rushed to the scene," he said.

Twelve firefighters, supported by a fire and rescue vehicle and an emergency medical rescue services unit, were deployed to the scene.

Firefighters cleared debris to eliminate further hazards before ending the operation at 1.11am.

Police and PLUS personnel were also on hand to assist.

One of the injured was identified as a 44-year-old man, while the identities of the other three were not available.
