Motorcyclist yields gun, shabu at Quezon checkpoint

LUCENA CITY — A motorcycle rider was caught with an illegal hand gun and shabu (crystal meth) at a checkpoint in Candelaria town in Quezon province on Wednesday (Aug. 19), police said on Thursday (Aug. 20).
At 11:30 a.m., the 29-year-old rider, identified by police as “Luis,” was flagged down at a checkpoint along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Bukal Sur for riding without a crash helmet.
Wearing protective headgear for motorcyclists is mandated under Republic Act No. 10054, otherwise known as the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.

But a policeman also noticed a weapon tucked into his waistband.
Instead of heeding the order to stop, Luis sped off, prompting the police to give chase until the motorcycle rider was cornered and was arrested. The rider behaved poorly and allegedly cursed the arresting officers.
The suspect’s undocumented firearm — a caliber .38 revolver with two bullets — was confiscated.
When frisked, the cops also found two plastic sachets containing shabu weighing 1.26 grams, worth P8,568.
The suspect was detained while charges of illegal possession of a firearm, ammunition, and illegal drugs were being prepared. /das
