RI, Australia push for multilateral reform to boost regional stability

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong held a bilateral meeting in Jakarta on Thursday to discuss strategies for strengthening multilateral cooperation and bolstering regional stability.

Speaking after the meeting at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Arrmanatha emphasized that both nations must maximize their engagement through regional mechanisms, specifically highlighting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

"We discussed the situation in the region and how we can contribute to regional resilience through various existing mechanisms," he stated.

He further noted the importance of incorporating other multilateral organizations where both countries share membership, such as the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).

Aside from regional frameworks, Arrmanatha underlined the urgency of updating international governance, noting that he invited Australia to join forces in advocating for broader systemic reforms on the international stage.

"I also conveyed that we should work together to push for reforms at the multilateral level," he added.

Wong's visit to Jakarta was arranged as a dedicated detour following engagements in Papua New Guinea, a diplomatic gesture Indonesian officials cited as evidence of the strong bilateral bond.

Arrmanatha linked the momentum to broader foreign policy directives under Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who has consistently prioritized maintaining harmonious, cooperative relations with all regional neighbors.

While the talks steered clear of isolated bilateral disputes, both ministers committed to deepening cross-sector collaboration to ensure that robust bilateral communication translates into tangible benefits.

"There is a commitment from Australia to continue strengthening its relationship with Indonesia, as they view Indonesia as a very special country for Australia. Moreover, there is a high level of trust between the two heads of state," Arrmanatha concluded.
