Fatal cycling accidents in Hong Kong more than double in first half of 2026

Translate

Fatal cycling accidents in Hong Kong more than doubled in the first half of 2026 compared with a year earlier, with nine deaths recorded, as police point to cyclists ignoring traffic signals and road signs.

Overall, there were 59 fatal traffic accidents in the first six months of the year, killing 63 people, up more than 40 per cent from a year earlier. Fatal cases involving bicycles surged 125 per cent, accounting for nine of those deaths.

“Most cyclists tend to ignore traffic signals and road signs, and ride without carefully observing surrounding road conditions,” a police spokesman said.

“Combined with dangerous behaviours such as riding on the pavement, illegally carrying passengers and riding side by side, this largely increases the risk of accidents.”

In response, the New Territories North police region launched a cycling safety campaign on August 1, combining street promotions, community lectures, interactive games and social media outreach to target high-risk behaviours and raise awareness of related laws and road safety.

Officers then carried out a targeted enforcement operation on September 4 and 5, after the education phase, issuing nine warnings and 159 summonses over the two days.
