7 Years Later, Star Wars' New Kylo Ren Series Finally Answers A Major Mystery

In 2019, Kylo Ren’s journey concluded in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The final installment in Star Wars’ Skywalker Saga saw Snoke’s former apprentice reject the dark side, reclaim his original identity as Ben Solo, and help Rey permanently destroy Palpatine. However, it came at a great cost, as Ben gave up his own life force to resurrect Rey when she was fatally injured by the former emperor.

Since plans for Adam Driver to reprise a resurrected Ben in a post-Rise of Skywalker movie were scrapped, Star Wars fans still know how the character’s story ultimately ends. However, there are still gaps in his life left to be filled, which has been done in recent years through books and comic book series. The latest of these stories is finally answering a mystery concerning Kylo Ren that was left lingering at the end of The Rise of Skywalker.

The Knights Of Ren’s Return Is Finally Explained

When Rey touched Luke’s old lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, she was bombarded by a series of visions, including one showing Kylo Ren on a dark and stormy night with the Knights of Ren. Yet, not only did the Knights not factor into that Star Wars movie’s story, they didn’t appear in The Last Jedi either. It wasn’t until The Rise of Skywalker that they came to the forefront, though their reemergence wasn’t addressed since they simply served as silent muscle.

As shown in the preview for Marvel Comics' Star Wars: The Fall of Kylo Ren #2, the Knights return to Kylo Ren’s side in the year between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker because they didn't have a choice. Tava Ren, introduced in Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, informs her fellow Knights aboard the Night Buzzard that their former leader, who’s now commanding The First Order after killing Snoke, is their “only hope” for the predicament they’re in.

While Vicrul and Trudgen believe this will result in their deaths, Tava is nonetheless willing to take this “pretty damn slim” chance since her predecessor is “stronger in the shadow” than the rest of them. The “shadow” is what they call the dark side of the Force. So though returning to the man who once led the Knights of Ren is not ideal, Tava commands her cohorts to swallow their pride and join her in seeking Kylo Ren’s help.

Kylo Ren Abandoned The Knights Of Ren Before The Force Awakens

Marvel previously delved into the Knights of Ren’s history in Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren and Star Wars: Legacy of Vader. In the former series, it was revealed how Ben Solo killed the original Ren and succeeded him as the Knights’ leader. In the latter series, it was explained how Snoke ordered Kylo to leave them behind before the events of The Force Awakens, describing them as "the rats of the dark side.”

At some point after that, Tava joined the Knights of Ren and became their new leader, as she was determined to “fix” them. She and Kylo first crossed paths in Legacy of Vader, as she initially attempted to kill him shortly after The Last Jedi, but then attempted to coax him back to the Knights, even going so far as to kiss him. This ploy failed, and it was only by Kylo’s mercy that Tava escaped his Star Destroyer alive.

Now, she once again believes the only course of option is to turn to Kylo Ren, though doing so will likely cost her her life. Ap'lek, Cardo, Kuruk, Trudgen, Ushar, and Vicrul all appear in The Rise of Skywalker, but Tava does not. Since Kylo Ren controlling the Knights once again in The Rise of Skywalker, it’s likely he will either kill Tava in The Fall of Kylo Ren to reassume leadership, or, if she’s lucky, drive her into hiding with her ties to the Knights of Ren permanently severed.
