Everybody is saying the same thing about Johnny Depp's new thriller as new trailer lands

Day Drinker may boast a stacked cast including Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz, but viewers are only talking about one thing. Following the release of the trailer, Johnny Depp's accent has been the main topic of discussion.

The thriller film sees Cline portray Lorna, a bartender who works on a private yacht. While working one of their shifts, they come across Kelly (Depp), a mysterious individual who's an onboard guest.

They gradually get to know each other, but are soon thrust into a situation where both of their lives are in danger. At the centre is Cara Lazaro (Cruz), a dangerous criminal figure who is somehow connected.

Directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Zach Dean, Lionsgate has unveiled the teaser trailer for the film ahead of its theatrical release in March 2027, with Depp's character recalling his story to Lorna.

From the clips, it seems that Kelly is involved with the criminal underworld in some capacity, whether it be past or present. Given he takes plenty of people down in violent ways, it looks likely that he's burned some bridges in his past.

Following the release of the mysterious teaser, some people have speculated that Depp's character may be a vampire, with there being several hints - including the playful title - present in the clip.

Aside from that, much of the discourse is surrounding Depp's peculiar accent, which appears to be an attempt at an Irish one. Though he's noted for his voice work in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, some viewers aren't impressed by this one.

"That accent is wild. A bit of everything in there," wrote one user on Reddit, with another adding: "The trailer tells me next to nothing about what the movie is about, except Johnny Depp [is] drunk, violent, and has a weird accent."

"If this movie is half as crazy as that accent, I am up," added one excited viewer, while another noted: "Everyone talking shit on his accent (which I kinda agree with) but I will say that it at least looks really beautiful and has me intrigued to see more."

Some viewers thought that the character's background could mean that the strange accent is a deliberate choice, with one user remarking: "He's mixing multiple accents in the same sentences - And even says why in the trailer. It's honestly impressive."

Day Drinker is released in cinemas on 26 March 2027.
