Daily Snow Report: fine, warm conditions continue with two ‘very high’ UVB warnings

Tuesday, 25 August’s Daily Snow Report shows the settled pattern holding once again, with SAWS confirming no impact-based warnings or advisories in place for the day.

Gauteng can expect a fine, warm day. SAWS is forecasting a “very high” UVB sunburn index for the province, meaning precautions against prolonged sun exposure are worth taking even in late winter.

According to SAWS, fine conditions dominate the interior and northern provinces

Mpumalanga sees morning fog patches over the eastern Highveld and escarpment, clearing to fine and cool to warm conditions, though it turns hot in places over the Lowveld. 

Limpopo follows a similar pattern, with morning fog in the northwest and central parts giving way to fine and warm conditions, also turning hot in the Lowveld. 

North West stays fine and warm throughout, while the Free State holds at fine and cool to warm.

Northern Cape starts with morning fog patches before clearing to fine and warm to hot conditions, staying cooler along the coast.

Where fog, cloud, and UVB warnings come in

The Western Cape sees morning fog over the northwest and southern parts, otherwise turning fine to partly cloudy and warm to hot, with cold conditions persisting in places along the south and southwest coasts.

The province also carries a “very high” UVB sunburn index alongside Gauteng.

The Eastern Cape‘s western half stays fine and cool, turning cloudy with mist along the south in the morning and evening before clearing to partly cloudy.

The eastern half sees a fine, cool day, becoming cloudy with fog along the coast and adjacent interior by evening, otherwise partly cloudy.

KwaZulu-Natal starts partly cloudy with morning fog over the interior, clearing to fine and cool to warm conditions.

The province carries the day’s most serious sun exposure warning, with an “extreme” UVB sunburn index in effect.

Why the UVB warnings matter more than the mild temperatures suggest

It’s easy to underestimate sun exposure risk in late winter, but three provinces are carrying “very high” to “extreme” UVB warnings today.

That’s hectic to think about on a day that otherwise reads as mild and unremarkable. Anyone spending real time outdoors in Gauteng, the Western Cape, or KwaZulu-Natal today should take it seriously.
