Melitta
Let’s start with the flatbread, a contender for the best snack – maybe the best bread course – in the city. The fluffy disc topped with melting onion butter and anchovies is a must-order from the check-the-box menu, alongside pre-batched cocktails such as the namesake Meli-to, a bittersweet one-two punch laced with seasonal fruit, perhaps rhubarb and watermelon or maybe tangelo. The more savoury Very Dirty Martini, below-zero in temp, is a strong match for smoky skewers of crisp-edged roo and pancetta.
Tunes are turned up and groups at checker-clothed tables start to mingle over arrosticini lamb skewers. They’re simply barbecued over charcoal with lemon and garlic but they are the menu’s true sleeper hit. While a full-blown meal is possible, with substantial dishes such as pomegranate-glazed chicken on pearled cous cous, Melitta’s sweet spot is a couple of rounds of top-tier drinks, a table full of snacks and maybe another drink for the road.
Must-order: Lamb arrosticini skewers.
