‘Habagat’ to bring rains, rough seas to parts of Visayas until Aug. 23

ILOILO CITY — The southwest monsoon or “habagat” will continue to influence weather conditions across the western section of the Visayas in the coming days, bringing rain showers, thunderstorms, strong winds and rough seas to several areas, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The Visayas Pagasa Regional Services Division (VPRSD) said Saturday, Aug. 15, that the southwest monsoon is affecting Luzon and the western section of the Visayas.

In its special weather outlook for Mt. Kanlaon, Pagasa forecast partly cloudy to cloudy skies Saturday, with a low to moderate chance of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the morning and/or afternoon.

Conditions around the volcano are expected to deteriorate beginning Monday, Aug. 17, when cloudy skies and a moderate to high chance of rain showers or thunderstorms are forecast. Similar conditions are expected Tuesday before the chance of rain eases somewhat on Wednesday.

Southwesterly winds around Mt. Kanlaon are forecast at 30 to 40 kilometers per hour (kph). Temperatures may range from 26 to 33 degrees Celsius through Wednesday, while the heat index could reach 40°C on Saturday and as high as 39°C in the succeeding days, levels categorized as “extreme caution.”

In Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, where the Regional Convergence of Education Leaders is scheduled, Pagasa expects cloudy skies with a moderate to high chance of rain showers and thunderstorms from Aug. 17 to 21, particularly during the afternoon and evening.

Southwesterly winds there could reach 40 to 50 kph, while seas are forecast to remain rough, with waves ranging from 2.4 to 3.3 meters throughout the five-day period.

Temperatures in Sipalay are expected to range from 24 to 31°C, with heat index values of 33 to 35°C, also under the “extreme caution” category.

Similar unsettled conditions are expected in Kalibo, Aklan, where Pagasa issued an extended outlook for a special event operation covering Aug. 19 to 23.

Kalibo may experience cloudy skies and a moderate to high chance of rain showers or thunderstorms on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Thursday and Friday will have mostly cloudy to cloudy skies with a moderate chance of rain showers or thunderstorms, particularly from the afternoon to evening.

Winds could reach 40 to 50 kph Wednesday before easing to 30 to 50 kph during the rest of the period.

Sea conditions off Aklan are forecast to be rough Wednesday, with waves of 2.4 to 3.3 meters, and moderate to rough from Thursday through Sunday, with waves ranging from 1.3 to 3.3 meters.

Heat index readings in Kalibo could reach 36°C despite the rainy weather, remaining within the “extreme caution” range.

The forecasts indicate that residents and visitors in affected areas may have to contend with a combination of rain, gusty winds, rough seas and uncomfortable heat in the coming days.
